Learn more about the Cairns region’s wildlife at one of the many award-winning animal attractions in the area. Cairns is home to fantastic zoos and animal attractions where visitors can get up close and personal with everything from koalas and cane toads to crocodiles and lions.

If you are only visiting for a short time, pop up to the Cairns Wildlife Dome at the Reef Hotel Casino on Cairns Esplanade. Here you can take a guided walk of Australian flora and fauna – right in the centre of the city.

Those on a longer trip can visit a number of interesting attractions including Cairns Tropical Zoo with its fantastic night tour of nocturnal animals and fun cane toad races for the kids.

Or visit the Atherton Tableland from the Kuranda Range and see the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and catch a glimpse of the African savannah at the Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve – lions and tigers, oh my.

For a typically tropical experience, head north on the Captain Cook Highway to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures where visitors can watch live crocodile feeding shows.

Keep going north and you will reach the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary at Port Douglas where you can have breakfast with the birds.

If animals are your thing, the Cairns region has something for everyone to enjoy. There are dedicated venues and also tours designed to spot Cairns wildlife in the great outdoors.
