The region around Cairns is full of great motocyle road trips including the Kuranda range to the north and Gillies range to the south.

The coastal ride up to Port Douglas is also a great ride with a number of hot stopping-off points for refreshments, photos and leg-stretching.

On the Atherton Tableland, there are great scenic rides from north to south and back again with excellent small towns and villages to enjoy.

There are a couple of dedicated motorcycle tour companies in the Cairns region taking on the outback and “bush bashing’ motorcross-style tours.

Obviously you’ll need to hold a motorcycle license which is acceptable in Australia; an international bike license will do the trick.

It’s worth checking out the local road rules as well … even if you are just visiting and are being taken on a tour, you will be liable for all traffic infringements.

A motorcycle helmet needs to worn at all times while riding a motorcycle in Australia. For more extreme off-road motorcycle tours other safety equipment is also required.

Tours should be booked in advance. During the wet season – from about November to May – you need to be especially careful on the roads. Some outback tours may not run during this period.

These tours are not usually acceptable for kids; check with the operators in advance.
