Golfing in Cairns took off with a bang about 10 years ago as the city became a mecca for Japanese tourists.
These days, golf continues to be one of the most popular sports in the area. A game of golf on a local public course can be a cheap holiday activity with prices around $35 for a round of 18 holes.
Public golf courses near the city include the Cairns Golf Course which is only 10 minutes south of the city and the Half Moon Bay Golf Course at Yorkeys Knob which is about 15 minutes north of Cairns.
Cairns Golf Course on the Bruce Highway at Woree is an established course that challenges all levels of golfers. It is 18 holes, 72 par and green fees are $35. It’s worth booking in advance for a weekend hit as the local competitions run throughout the year. There is a practice fairway, club house and pro shop.
Half Moon Bay Golf Club is at Yorkeys Knob on the Cairns Northern Beaches, about 15 minutes north of Cairns.
This is a public club with a standard course, water play on 11 holes, a club house, practice nets and putting green. Like the Cairns City club, this is a popular course with locals so it’s worth booking in advance for a tee time. The course is 18 holes, par 70 and green fees are $35.
Paradise Palms Golf Club at Clifton Beach, about 20 minutes north of Cairns, is rated as one of the top 20 golf courses in Australia and considered to be one of the most difficult. The championship course is 18 holes, 72 par and green fees are $120. This is a public course but it is worth booking tee times on the weekends.
Further north at Palm Cove, the Novotel Rockford Resort has a 9-hole course requiring soft spikes, par 70 and green fees are $27.50 for two rounds (18 holes). There is a club house, numerous water hazards, chipping green and driving range.
Port Douglas, about an hour north of Cairns, has a number of links-style golf courses attached to major resorts.
The Mossman Golf Course on Newell Beach Rd is a public course and visitors are welcome. It has 18 holes, a par 72 and green fees are $25.
In Port Douglas, several luxury resorts offer great links-style courses. The Sea Temple Golf & Country Club on Old Port Rd offers 18 holes, par 81 and green fees are $110. The course has been voted in the top 50 public access courses in Australia and has been ranked as one of the top six links-style courses in the country. Tee off is from 6.30am-4pm daily except Christmas Day.
Another popular spot is the Sheraton Mirage Country Club on Davidson St in Port Douglas. This is a championship course designed by Peter Thomson and has been played by golfing greats like Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. There is also an aquatic driving range, practice facilities and a large club house. There are 18 holes, par 72 and green fees are $145 and include the compulsory cart. Bookings are essential; tee-off is 7.30am to 3pm daily.

The Cooktown Golf Links / Walker Bay Course on Quarantine Bay Rd in Cooktown is a public course built on sand and with dual tees. This is the most northerly Cairns golf course on the east coast so the greens can dry up a little during summer and the wind can get up to 20 knots. There are 9 holes, par 65 and green fees cost $22 for a double round (18 holes).
The Atherton Tableland’s golf courses are mainly public courses with a country atmosphere but offering some challenging golf.
Mareeba Golf Course on Hampe St offers 18 holes, par 72 and green fees of $20; bookings are advised and catering can be arranged.
Atherton Golf Club on Golf Links Rd is open to the public and offers 18 holes, par 72 and green fees cost $20.
Millaa Millaa Golf Club on Malanda Rd is short but interesting with 9 holes, par 70 and, with green fees of only $10, this is the cheapest game in the area.
Ravenshoe Millstream Country Golf Club offers 9 holes, par 72 and Mount Garnet Golf Club is 9 holes, par 70. Both are public courses but it could be worth booking in advance on the weekends.
Just about every small town in the Gulf area has a small golf course open to the public.
South of Cairns, from the city to Mission Beach, are a number of good public golf courses. Gordonvale Golf Club is about 15 minutes south of Cairns and offers 18 holes, par 70 and green fees are $16.50. Booking is suggested for the weekends.
Further south are the golf courses of Babinda Golf Club, Innisfail Golf Club, El Arish Golf Club and Tully Golf Club. These are all public courses of various lengths and quality but all welcome visitors and all offer really cheap green fees. Innisfail Golf Club is quite good with a challenging 9 and composite 18 hole course.
